THE EXPERIENCE

Discover the expedition

At 3,776 meters, Lanín Volcano is one of Patagonia’s most iconic mountains and a classic mountaineering objective in Argentina. Its distinctive volcanic silhouette and its location in the Patagonian Andes make this ascent a unique high-altitude experience.

The first day takes you through lenga forests and mountain terrain to the refuge area, where you spend the night and prepare the equipment for the summit attempt.

The following day begins in the early morning, usually around 3:00–4:00 a.m. As you gain elevation, the terrain becomes progressively more demanding, crossing sections of rock, loose scree and, depending on the season and current mountain conditions, snow and ice.

In the upper sections, crampons and an ice axe may be required depending on the conditions at the time of the ascent.

The final section requires concentration, endurance, and good adaptation to altitude. The summit, at 3,776 m, offers extraordinary panoramic views of Patagonia’s lakes, volcanoes, and mountain ranges, extending across both sides of the Andes.

The Lanín ascent combines mountaineering, significant elevation gain, and high-altitude terrain in a demanding climb where the guide’s experience and sound decision-making are essential for enjoying the mountain safely.

Day 1

Early departure by private transportation from Junín de los Andes or San Martín de los Andes, depending on where the group is staying.

After entering Lanín National Park, the group continues to the trailhead. From there, the trek begins towards the mountain refuges.

The main objective of the day is to gain elevation progressively and reach the refuge area, where the team prepares the equipment and organizes everything needed for the summit attempt.

Overnight: mountain refuge or high-altitude camp.

Day 2

Departure approximately between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m., depending on weather conditions, mountain conditions, and the pace of the group.

The ascent begins during the early morning hours to take advantage of favorable snow and ice conditions and to allow sufficient time for the summit attempt and descent.

The upper section may require crampons and an ice axe, depending on the conditions, as well as the ability to move safely over snow and ice.

Summit: 3,776 m.

After spending a limited amount of time at the summit and enjoying the panoramic views, the descent begins along the same route back to the trailhead.

From there, private transportation returns the group to the starting point.
